Delhi Sets Class 1 Entry Age at Six From 2026-27

The DoE’s circular aligns schools with NEP 2020 by phasing in a three-year pre-primary stage before Class 1.

Overview

  • The directive applies to all Delhi government, government-aided and recognised unaided private schools under the DoE starting with the 2026-27 session.
  • Age bands as on March 31 are fixed as Nursery (3–4 years), Lower KG (4–5), Upper KG (5–6) and Class 1 (6–7).
  • School heads may grant up to one month of relaxation on the minimum or maximum age for admissions from Nursery through Class 1.
  • Students already enrolled in 2025-26, and children transferring with a valid School Leaving Certificate and marksheet, are exempt from the new age-fit rule for progression.
  • Lower and Upper KG will be added in phases beginning 2027-28, 2026-27 KG admissions remain open to children aged 4+, and schools have been told to clearly inform parents and update admission materials.
