Delhi Set for Clear, Warmer Week as Air Quality Deteriorates

Dry, clear weather through October 22 will let local emissions accumulate and raise public health concerns.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department forecast no rainfall in Delhi through October 22, with mainly clear skies from October 18 and maximum temperatures rising to about 32–34°C by October 21–22.
  • Heavy showers before October 16 produced measurable station totals such as Ridge 25.2 mm and Safdarjung 15.9 mm and briefly lowered local temperatures.
  • Citywide 24‑hour average air quality worsened from roughly 90 (satisfactory) on October 16 to 159 (moderate) by 4 pm on October 17 and recorded higher readings into October 18.
  • Some monitoring stations recorded very poor pollution levels, with Anand Vihar at 348, Mundka 227 and Jahangirpuri 212, showing large differences between neighbourhoods.
  • The IMD warned that while Delhi stays dry, parts of southern India including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep face fairly widespread to very heavy rain and thunderstorms through October 16–22.
