Delhi Rolls Out Electric School Buses in New Push for Cleaner Student Commutes

  • Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off more than 24 electric buses at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Lodhi Estate.
  • Officials said the fleet will serve about 1,200 students and could replace an estimated 400–500 private vehicle trips each day, easing pollution and congestion.
  • The chief minister urged all schools to transition from diesel and CNG buses to electric models and praised Sardar Patel Vidyalaya for converting its entire fleet with government support.
  • The government announced citywide school competitions on environmental themes to promote sustainable habits among students.
  • Transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh described the rollout as a pilot with another school to be added next, said expansion will be guided by cost and maintenance assessments, and projected more than 5,000 electric buses on Delhi roads by December.
