Overview
- The Delhi power department issued a Gazette notification dated September 30 using Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act to make Aadhaar authentication or proof mandatory for subsidy recipients.
- The rule covers beneficiaries served by BRPL, BYPL, TPDDL, NDMC and MES, and implementing agencies have been ordered to widely publicise the requirement.
- Consumers who do not yet have an Aadhaar number can claim the subsidy by submitting an Aadhaar enrolment application and the 14‑digit enrolment ID.
- A dedicated online portal will be launched to collect Aadhaar details and beneficiaries must renew their choice each year to continue receiving the subsidy.
- The move responds to a sharp rise in subsidy take-up and cost — the allocation reached ₹4,037.63 crore by February 2026 and the government budgeted ₹3,500 crore for 2026–27 — and could tighten targeting but will require clear outreach to avoid excluding eligible households.
