Delhi Records Lowest September Nighttime Low Since 2008

The India Meteorological Department says localized rain from a passing weather system caused the brief cool spell and that dry, warmer conditions are expected through early October.

Overview

  • Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary IMD station, recorded a minimum of 21°C on Tuesday, the lowest September reading at that site since 2008.
  • Several local stations fell even lower with Palam at 19.7°C, Lodhi Road 20.4°C, Ayanagar 20.6°C and the Ridge 16.9°C, showing sharp citywide variation in overnight lows.
  • The cool spell followed light, localized rain—Ridge 2.2 mm, Palam 1 mm and Ayanagar 0.7 mm—which the IMD says helped push overnight temperatures below normal.
  • The IMD forecasts mainly dry weather for Delhi through about October 5 with nightly lows around 20–22°C and daytime highs rising from roughly 32–34°C toward normal by the weekend.
  • Delhi’s air quality stayed in the ‘satisfactory’ range (24‑hour AQI in the low 60s–70s), and the short cool spell comes after the southwest monsoon withdrew from the city on September 23 while a weakening Bay of Bengal system brings rain to parts of southern and northeastern India.
