Delhi Records Coldest December Day in Six Years as Fog Disrupts Travel

IMD warns of persistent dense fog with cold-day conditions across north and east India into early January.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department said dense to very dense fog and cold-day or cold-wave conditions will continue for several days across large parts of northern and eastern India.
  • Delhi’s maximum fell to 14.2°C, the lowest December day since 2019 per IMD data, with the minimum at 6.4°C and a chance of very light rain around New Year’s Day.
  • Visibility dropped to 50 metres at times in the capital as flight operations were hit, with around 150 cancellations, more than 500 delays and two diversions reported at IGI airport.
  • Kolkata logged its season-low minimum of 11.0°C, as IMD and the Regional Meteorological Centre flagged morning fog across West Bengal and forecast light snow or rain in Darjeeling on January 1–2.
  • Cold intensified elsewhere with a Jharkhand cold wave (Gumla at 2.4°C) and fog-related disruptions reported in the Northeast, including flight cancellations and delays in Guwahati.
