Delhi PWD Finalizes Multi-Year Maintenance Plan for Signature Bridge

The plan follows a July audit that found widespread corrosion and a largely non-functional bridge health monitoring system, and it calls for targeted testing before major underwater and foundation repairs.

Overview

  • The Delhi Public Works Department finalized the maintenance and rehabilitation plan on Tuesday, August 25, after a July visual audit flagged multiple defects across the 154-metre pylon cable‑stayed bridge.
  • The audit found the Bridge Health Monitoring System largely non-functional, with many sensors damaged, missing or passive, and the plan proposes a BHMS overhaul with new sensors, a data‑acquisition unit and a control room.
  • Steel components showed visible corrosion most severely on the skywalk ramp, where rust scaling, coating failure and corroded joints, splices and fasteners were reported and now face detailed assessment and steelwork rehabilitation.
  • Underwater and subsurface portions could not be fully inspected during the July visual survey because of water flow and safety limits, so the PWD has ordered specialised underwater and non‑destructive testing before major foundation or scour works proceed.
  • The PWD will institute monthly and six‑monthly inspections plus specialised checks after extreme events and has proposed a five‑year preventive and corrective maintenance programme as it assumes upkeep after a recent administrative handover.
