Delhi Police Dismantles Vasant Kunj Cigarette Smuggling Operation

An FIR under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act has been filed to support an ongoing probe into cross-border smuggling routes.

Following the recovery, a case was registered at Vasant Kunj South Police Station under the COTPA Act.

Overview

  • On June 28, Delhi Police’s Operations Cell raided a basement warehouse in Vasant Kunj following a tip-off and recovered 94,000 packets of foreign cigarettes.
  • The consignment comprised L&B Original Silver, King Size Mayfair, Richmond King Size Real Blue and Richmond King Size, all lacking mandatory health warnings and MRP markings.
  • Two suspects—22-year-old Parikshit, the godown owner, and 40-year-old PP Chengappa from Karnataka—were arrested on charges under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act.
  • Police say the illicit cigarettes were smuggled in from Greece and Dubai for distribution across Delhi-NCR and parts of southern India.
  • An FIR under Sections 7, 14 and 20(2) of COTPA has been registered at Vasant Kunj South Police Station and investigators are tracing additional warehouses and distributors.
