Delhi Police Bust Fake Desi Ghee Racket, Seize 1,625 Kg and Arrest Six

Investigators are tracing a wider supply chain after raids on three north‑east Delhi units producing chemically altered tins packed to mimic popular brands.

Overview

  • Crime Branch teams raided Shiv Vihar, Karawal Nagar and Old Mustafabad, seizing 1,625 kg of spurious ghee stored in 105 tins along with chemicals, stoves, gas cylinders and packing equipment.
  • Six suspects were arrested and identified as Safiq, Yusuf Malik, his son Mehboob, Shakir, Sharukh and Zamaluddin, with police noting some were habitual offenders.
  • Interrogation findings say the product was made by heating vanaspati and cheap refined oils and adding synthetic flavours and colours to imitate pure desi ghee.
  • Cases have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Food Safety and Standards Act as investigators work to identify suppliers, distributors and financiers tied to the network.
  • FSSAI guidance cited by police warns adulterated ghee poses serious health risks, including cancer risk, and officers say the racket targeted festive demand by supplying dairies and shops with lookalike tins.
