• Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankit Chauhan said Khushi Ram, 47, and his son were taken into custody in connection with the fatal attack on Congress worker Lakhpat Singh Kataria during a morning walk in Vijay Mandal Park.
• Investigators said Kataria was chased, bludgeoned with a cricket bat and shot, before being taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared dead.
• According to police, Ram harboured a grudge after a 2016 assault linked to a property dispute and confessed during questioning that the killing was planned as retribution.
• Police say the attack was executed a day before the son’s 18th birthday, with the son conducting reconnaissance of the victim’s routine to facilitate the plan.
• The case was pieced together through analysis of more than 650 CCTV cameras across 55 km and call records, with officers recovering a black motorcycle without a number plate and the pistol used; the wider conspiracy remains under investigation.
