Delhi Plans Temporary Yamuna Ghats for Citywide Chhath Puja This Year

The move follows years of court restrictions on riverbank rituals after the pandemic.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that Chhath observances will be held on both banks of the Yamuna from Palla in the north to Okhla in the south with comprehensive arrangements.
  • Immersion in the river remains prohibited under current rules, and the government says it will provide facilities focused on worship and safety instead.
  • Departments were directed to upgrade ghats with better lighting, water sprinkling to curb dust, robust police and traffic plans, removal of water hyacinth, and on-site medical support.
  • Officials cited 929 sites across the city—including ghats, canals, drains and ponds—with expedited clearances for required NOCs and inspections by the chief minister ahead of the festival.
  • The plan restores large riverbank celebrations paused during COVID-19 and later limited by court orders, following interim years when the city set up temporary tanks in parks.
