Delhi Pilots Catalytic Converter Retrofits on 30 Older Heavy Vehicles

DPCC is fitting older BS-III and IV government trucks with retrofit units claiming over 70 percent emission cuts ahead of technical validation by IIT Delhi or ICAT.

Overview

  • The Delhi Pollution Control Committee will install catalytic converter devices on up to 30 Bharat Stage-III and IV government heavy vehicles to test emissions reduction.
  • Chakra Innovations designed the retrofit units, which internal trials report have over 9,000 kilometres of field durability, low back pressure and self-regeneration capabilities.
  • Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said lab and road tests indicate the devices can cut particulate matter, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides by more than 70 percent.
  • Independent performance verification at IIT Delhi or the International Centre for Automotive Technology will determine whether the units meet regulatory and certification standards.
  • If the pilot confirms vendor claims, Delhi plans to include retrofit technology in its long-term transport-sector strategy as a cost-effective alternative to vehicle scrappage.
