Delhi Orders Time-Bound Trials of ‘Smog-Eating’ Coatings to Cut Urban Pollution
Officials impose firm deadlines from partner selection in 30 days to trial completion in six months.
Overview
- Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa directed the Environment Department to run a feasibility study on photocatalytic, titanium dioxide–based coatings for roads, pavements and public spaces.
- The department will sign an MoU with a reputed scientific institution within 30 days and file monthly progress reports during the study period.
- On‑ground field trials will be conducted on selected city stretches, with the full study slated to conclude within six months of the MoU.
- Evaluations will prioritize safety, environmental sustainability and cost‑efficiency while mapping credible suppliers to enable scaling if results warrant it.
- If the technology proves effective and economical, the department will seek Cabinet approval for rapid deployment at priority sites, as part of a broader technology‑led pollution strategy linked to the Delhi Innovators’ Challenge.
