Delhi Orders Slum Survey to Shift Polluting Cooking to LPG Under Ujjwala

The exercise will map households using wood or coal to prioritise eligible families for clean-fuel connections.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to carry out a citywide survey of slum and JJ clusters to identify homes using chulhas or coal-fired heaters.
  • The government said identified families will be provided LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, with a prioritised eligibility list to be prepared from the survey.
  • Gupta described the response as a war‑footing effort, with senior officials from PWD, Irrigation and Flood Control, DUSIB, DSIIDC, MCD and NDMC deployed across the city.
  • Hotspot controls now include water and mist spraying, mechanical sweeping and dust suppression, use of smog guns, and repairs to roads and footpaths to limit particulate pollution.
  • Officials framed the initiative as a public‑health measure to cut indoor and domestic emissions that harm residents, especially women and children in dense settlements, with rollout pending the survey results.
