Overview
- The survivor, a Class 11 girl from Mainpuri, reported to Kashmere Gate police that she was gang-raped after boarding a sleeper bus at Pari Chowk on August 4 and a medical examination confirmed rape.
- Delhi Police traced and seized the bus within hours, arrested driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep at a Timarpur parking lot, and recovered strands of the victim’s hair and stained clothing now sent for DNA and forensic analysis.
- Investigators are mapping the vehicle’s movements using CCTV footage and the mobile-phone location of an accused to see how the bus travelled roughly 43–47 km without being stopped and to identify any stops or witnesses.
- Probe findings have flagged operational lapses including a non‑operational CCTV system while the bus was in repairs, thick sleeper curtains that hid activity, recent traffic challans and lack of background checks by the operator.
- The case has prompted NHRC and DCW notices, a Greater Noida–Delhi policing dispute, and a Delhi government proposal to link bus GPS feeds for real-time monitoring as authorities and the public watch for faster enforcement and stronger safety rules.
