Delhi Orders 53 Fast-Track Special Courts for Women’s and Children’s Cases

The move follows High Court recommendations after an LG-led task force push to tackle a backlog exceeding 17,000 cases.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that orders have taken effect to expand fast-track capacity for sensitive cases across the capital.
  • Sixteen ad-hoc Fast Track Special Courts will be converted into permanent benches, with 37 additional courts to be created for a total of 53.
  • The courts will prioritize POCSO matters and rape cases under Section 376 of the IPC or Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • The government pledged to appoint 53 judicial officers and supporting staff and to provide infrastructure, with proposals sent to the finance department for approvals.
  • Officials said the decision stems from consultations with the Delhi High Court and Finance Commission following directives issued through the LG’s women’s safety task force.
