Delhi Opens Yamuna Banks for Chhath, Ramps Up to 1,300-Plus Ghats Citywide

Officials accelerate inspections to ready sites for the four-day festival starting October 25.

Overview

  • Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and minister Kapil Mishra reviewed preparations at Vasudev Ghat as the government targets more than 1,300 ghats, including special arrangements along the Yamuna.
  • Delhi has lifted past restrictions on worship at the riverbanks and will withdraw cases filed against devotees during the 2021 curbs.
  • The plan includes 17 model ghats along the Yamuna from Palla to Kalindi Kunj, with at least one model site in every district or sub-division.
  • A single-window system is streamlining permissions while facilities such as sanitation, mobile toilets, drinking water, medical vans, ambulances, fire safety and lighting are being deployed.
  • Political contention sharpened as AAP alleged water diversion to make the Yamuna appear cleaner, a charge the BJP rejected while citing improved dissolved oxygen levels and on-ground clean-up drives.
