Delhi Opens Large Burari ATS and Orders PUC Enforcement From Oct. 1

The government says the move will use cameras and automated testing to create year-round, technology-driven oversight to reduce vehicle emissions by deterring invalid PUC certificates.

Overview

  • The Burari Automated Testing Station was inaugurated on Saturday, Sept. 26, and can test 40,000 heavy and 60,000 light vehicles a year at the five‑lane facility.
  • Delhi will begin an enforcement drive from October 1 to check the validity of Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates and tighten compliance for vehicles across the city.
  • Cameras will be installed at all PUC centres and fitness checks at ATS sites will be fully automated, covering braking efficiency, suspension, headlight condition, side‑slip, emissions and underside inspections.
  • With ATS centres now operating in Nand Nagri, Tehkhand and Burari, the government says automated testing capacity exceeds 250,000 vehicles annually, expanding access for commercial vehicle owners.
  • Officials frame the measures as part of a year‑round pollution control push to improve air quality before winter, and the step could lead to stricter on‑road checks and denial of services for vehicles without valid PUCs.
