Delhi Opens 45 Atal Canteens Serving Rs 5 Meals, With 55 More Coming

A budgeted, tech‑monitored rollout is designed to ensure transparent, dignified access to standardized low‑cost meals.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 45 canteens on Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary, with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar participating, and officials say the remaining 55 will open within 15–20 days.
  • The consumer price is Rs 5 per plate while the government bears Rs 25 per meal, with about Rs 104.24 crore allocated for operation and management under the scheme.
  • Each site is designed to serve roughly 1,000 meals a day across two services, and the network is projected to reach more than 100,000 people daily once all 100 canteens are running.
  • Operations use digital token distribution, real‑time CCTV monitoring via DUSIB, and regular FSSAI/NABL lab testing; 11 agencies were selected through tender and around 700 jobs are expected.
  • The standardized thali includes dal, rice, roti and vegetables, targeting daily wage workers and low‑income residents, with initial locations spanning areas such as RK Puram, Jangpura, Shalimar Bagh, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, Narela and Bawana.
