Delhi Opens 45 Atal Canteens, Kicks Off Rs 5 Meal Scheme Citywide

A phased rollout delivers Rs 5 meals with digital monitoring, backed by a Rs 100 crore allocation.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 45 of the planned 100 canteens on Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary, with the remaining sites to open in the coming days.
  • Each centre serves two sittings daily — lunch from 11 am to 4 pm and dinner from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm — targeting roughly 1,000 meals per site per day.
  • Diners pay Rs 5 for a thali of dal, rice, roti and vegetables, with officials pegging the meal’s value near Rs 30 and the government covering about Rs 25 in subsidy.
  • Meal distribution uses digital tokens with real-time CCTV oversight via the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, and kitchens are equipped with LPG stoves, RO water and cold storage.
  • Food samples will be tested by FSSAI and NABL-accredited labs, and initial locations include Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, Shalimar Bagh, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, Narela and Bawana.
