Delhi NCR under yellow alert as storms persist; monsoon settles in Mumbai

Under a yellow alert through June 3, the IMD forecasts gusty thunderstorms with light rain over Delhi-NCR

Dust storms hit parts of Delhi and adjoining Noida, Gurugram on Sunday evening
At least 4 flights coming to Delhi were diverted between 5:00pm and 5:30pm.
If these weather conditions continue, 2025 could end up with not a single heatwave day in May or June — the two hottest months of the year before the advent of the rainy season. (Ravi Kumar/HT)

Overview

  • The IMD has extended its yellow alert for Delhi-NCR through June 3, warning of light showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 60 kmph
  • The storm on June 1 produced wind gusts as high as 96 kmph in Palam, uprooted trees and forced 14 flight diversions with over 350 delays at IGI airport
  • Heavy downpours on June 1 and early June 2 caused average temperature drops exceeding 10 °C across Delhi and improved the capital’s air quality to the “moderate” category (AQI 166)
  • Delhi recorded 188.9 mm of rainfall in May, making it one of the wettest Mays on record and preventing any heatwave days
  • Mumbai’s southwest monsoon arrived early on May 26 with heavy downpours that disrupted transport, and it now sees light to moderate showers without active alerts as the IMD predicts above-normal June rainfall
