Delhi-NCR Air Quality Nears Severe as Government Agrees to Lok Sabha Debate

The government will schedule a discussion following opposition demands for a non-partisan, time-bound, city-wise clean-air plan.

Overview

  • Delhi's overall AQI climbed to 387–393 on Saturday, with at least 18 neighbourhoods crossing 400 and hotspots such as Wazirpur and Jahangirpuri exceeding 440, according to CPCB readings.
  • Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said the Lok Sabha’s Business Advisory Committee will allocate time for the discussion after Rahul Gandhi called for a forward-looking debate.
  • Official forecasts from the Air Quality Early Warning System indicate conditions will remain very poor and may slide into severe, with low wind speeds and high moisture hindering dispersion.
  • The Commission for Air Quality Management set up a 15-member expert group led by IIT-Madras’s Ashok Jhunjhunwala, with Randeep Guleria as co-chair, to craft a roadmap to curb vehicular emissions in NCR.
  • A parliamentary standing committee recommended upgrading and redistributing monitoring stations across Delhi-NCR, warning that current placement skews data away from more polluted, densely populated areas.
