Delhi-NCR Air Quality Deteriorates Again With 16 Sites ‘Severe’ as Top Court Seeks School Sports Delay

Courts pressed regulators to delay school sports during the smog, reflecting stepped-up oversight of AQI monitoring.

Overview

  • CPCB data showed Delhi’s average AQI in the very poor range around 386–392 on Wednesday morning, with 16 of 39 stations crossing 400 and hotspots such as Wazirpur, Bawana and Jahangirpuri in the severe band.
  • The CAQM reiterated that GRAP Stage-III remains in force across NCR and that Stage-IV has not been invoked, with curbs on non-essential construction, diesel generators, certain vehicles and intensified road dust control.
  • The Supreme Court asked the CAQM to consider directing schools to postpone November–December sports events due to hazardous air, as the bench also scrutinizes the reliability of AQI monitoring equipment.
  • Separately, a group of schoolchildren moved the Delhi High Court seeking to shift outdoor sports calendars to months with verifiably better air quality.
  • Doctors at AIIMS warned of life-threatening health risks and residents protested for clean air, while primary classes in parts of Delhi shifted to hybrid mode as smog persisted across NCR cities.
