Delhi Names 26 Priority Flood Spots After Heavy Rain

A Rs.56,000-crore drainage master plan is being advanced to modernize a five-decade-old sewer and stormwater network.

Overview

  • Following the heavy downpour on August 24, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a report on August 25 that listed 26 locations where waterlogging lasted more than an hour and asked civic agencies to take immediate action on those stretches.
  • The PWD says the total number of problem spots has fallen to 115, with 60 under its control and 39 sites mapped for near-term fixes that could take three to four months.
  • PWD has identified 21 locations for permanent engineering work expected to take one to two years, and officials say the city’s drains were designed for a much smaller population and now lack capacity during intense rain.
  • Tensions have risen between agencies after anonymous NDMC officials criticized PWD desilting, while PWD defended its pre-monsoon work and pointed to a longstanding list of 448 vulnerable sites as evidence of recurring failures.
  • Water took up to five hours to drain in parts of south Delhi, snarling traffic on the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and underlining how chronic drainage gaps repeatedly disrupt commuters and commerce.
