Overview
- The power department issued a Gazette notification on September 30 using Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act to require beneficiaries to furnish Aadhaar proof to receive the electricity subsidy.
- The rule covers consumers served by BRPL, BYPL, TPDDL, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Military Engineer Services in their areas.
- Consumers without an Aadhaar number can still claim the subsidy by submitting an Aadhaar enrolment application and their 14-digit enrolment ID.
- Officials say a dedicated online portal will be launched soon, implementing agencies must publicise the change, and beneficiaries will be required to renew their choice every year to keep receiving the subsidy.
- The move responds to rising subsidy use and cost — official figures show allocations reached about Rs 4,037.63 crore by February 2026 and beneficiary households rose to roughly 55 lakh — and could speed identity checks but may create short-term enrollment or verification delays for some consumers.
