Delhi Launches Plan to Revamp Over 2,800 Bus Queue Shelters

Officials will choose a final design through an open competition to introduce LED-lit, revenue-generating bus shelters with digital displays

Overview

  • The transport minister announced that 1,397 new bus queue shelters are set for immediate construction and 1,459 additional sites have been earmarked for later phases
  • Design proposals are based on studies of existing models in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai, Singapore, London and China
  • Upgraded shelters will employ stainless steel frames and feature LED illumination alongside digital boards displaying bus routes and numbers
  • The Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation plans to replace old, dilapidated stops in both urban and rural areas to bolster the network
  • The overhaul is designed to make the transport department financially self-reliant and coincides with a bus route rationalisation drive for improved connectivity
