Delhi Launches Pilot of Battery-Powered Cooling Vests for Field Workers

Over the coming weeks, the pilot will evaluate whether dual-fan jackets lower body temperature to improve safety during heatwaves.

Overview

  • PWD minister Parvesh Verma distributed the first cooling vests at the PWD headquarters in ITO on July 4 to begin the pilot program.
  • Each vest runs on a 10,000 mAh battery and combines dual fans with ice-collar technology to reduce surface body temperature by up to 15 °C.
  • The initiative is part of the Delhi Heat Action Plan and is implemented by ADRA India in collaboration with the NDMA and DDMA.
  • Select field workers including traffic police, construction crews and daily-wage laborers have begun wearing the vests during outdoor shifts.
  • Authorities will collect performance data and worker feedback over the coming weeks to determine if the vests can be rolled out city-wide.
