Delhi Launches ‘Kude Se Azaadi’ Drive, Imposes Slum Eviction Moratorium

Citywide cleanup efforts run on performance incentives under a moratorium on slum demolitions until 50,000 JNNURM flats undergo refurbishment.

Overview

  • The month-long ‘Kude Se Azaadi’ campaign kicked off on August 1 with thousands of sanitation workers, government departments, RWAs and residents conducting cleanup drives at offices, Yamuna ghats and the Ring Road.
  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received Rs 5 crore in funding and high-performing wards and RWAs are eligible for cash rewards ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore based on cleanup results.
  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has initiated site selection for a new integrated secretariat after inspecting dilapidated government offices at Kashmere Gate.
  • A binding directive now prohibits any slum demolition without first providing rehousing to affected residents.
  • Under a plan approved on August 2, nearly 50,000 long-abandoned JNNURM flats will be renovated and allotted to eligible slum dwellers through PMAY-U.
