Delhi Is Most Unsafe Megacity for Road Users in 2023, NCRB Says

Experts blame weak enforcement, stalled traffic technology for persistently high risk.

Overview

  • Delhi recorded 5,715 road crashes and 1,457 deaths in 2023, accounting for 8.2% of the 69,910 accidents across Indian megacities, according to NCRB data.
  • Bengaluru reported 4,980 crashes and 915 deaths, and Jaipur logged 848 deaths, underscoring Delhi’s top ranking for fatalities.
  • Vulnerable users were hit hardest, with 622 two-wheeler deaths and 159 fatalities at pedestrian crossings, both the highest among megacities.
  • Delhi Traffic Police say fatalities have declined since 2022 due to hotspot mapping, targeted enforcement and issue-specific surveys.
  • Road safety specialists point to too few speed cameras and a long-delayed intelligent traffic management system as key gaps, and NCRB also lists 827 railway accidents in Delhi, the most among megacities.
