Delhi Imposes Immediate Ban on Coal and Firewood Tandoors at Eateries

Officials cite 'severe' air quality, with inspections and fines to enforce a switch to cleaner cooking.

Overview

  • Under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and GRAP provisions, the DPCC ordered all commercial food outlets to stop using coal- or wood-fired tandoors at once.
  • Only electric or gas-operated tandoors, or other CAQM‑approved clean‑fuel systems, are permitted across hotels, restaurants, dhabas and street-side food joints.
  • The directive also prohibits any open burning, including garbage, at food establishments as part of pollution-control measures.
  • Municipal bodies, district administrations and the MCD have been tasked with on‑site inspections and can levy fines of up to Rs 5,000 for violations.
  • Authorities referenced the CAQM approved fuel list from June 2022 and the revised GRAP order of November 21, 2023, and circulated the order by email and speed post for immediate implementation.
