Delhi High Court Summons Netflix, Red Chillies in Sameer Wankhede Defamation Case Over Aryan Khan Series

Interim relief will be considered on Oct. 30 following the court’s refusal to issue a blanket takedown.

Overview

  • Issuing summons after accepting an amended plaint on jurisdiction, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav directed the defendants to file replies within seven days and set the next hearing for October 30.
  • Former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede seeks Rs 2 crore in damages, pledged to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, and targeted takedown of portions of Episode 1 that he says defame him.
  • The suit names Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix, X Corp, Google LLC, Meta Platforms, RPG Lifestyle Media Pvt. Ltd., and a John Doe as defendants.
  • Wankhede alleges a character resembling him maligns his reputation and law-enforcement agencies, and he cites a scene showing a middle-finger gesture after ‘Satyamev Jayate’ as a violation of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
  • His counsel told the court the series has triggered trolling of Wankhede, his wife, and his sister, while the judge declined a general injunction and noted the process for considering specific relief.
