Overview

  • A bench led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela issued notices on July 16 under two public interest litigations filed by Kutumb and Anand Legal Aid Forum Trust.
  • The Delhi government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Police must file their replies within four weeks.
  • Petitioners demand a court-monitored probe into alleged safety regulation lapses, including inspections of commercial establishments operating without fire NOCs.
  • They also call for investigations into negligence by Vishal Mega Mart’s management and officials who approved unauthorized structures in Karol Bagh and adjoining areas.
  • The petitions cite a 37% jump in Delhi fire incidents in 2024 and reference the July 4 blaze that killed two men, including a UPSC aspirant, at an allegedly unauthorized outlet.
