Delhi High Court Seeks DU’s Objections on Delay in Appeals Over PM Modi’s Degree Disclosure

The bench will first decide whether to excuse the late filings before hearing challenges to a ruling that treated the university records as personal information.

Overview

  • A division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela declined to issue notice and asked Delhi University to file objections within three weeks.
  • Appellants will get two weeks to respond to DU’s objections, with the case listed for January 16, 2026.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for Delhi University and said he would file a reply rather than require formal notice.
  • The appeals by RTI activist Neeraj, AAP leader Sanjay Singh and advocate Mohd Irshad challenge an August 25 single-judge order that set aside a 2016 CIC directive for disclosure.
  • The single-judge ruling classified educational qualifications as personal information exempt under the RTI Act, whereas the CIC had previously treated the 1978 BA records as disclosable public documents.
