Delhi High Court Seeks Centre’s Stand on Vacant Minorities Commission Posts

The bench urged the government to start the appointment process before the next hearing on November 14.

Overview

  • Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela called the issue “very very important” and asked the Centre’s counsel to obtain instructions.
  • The petition by Mujahid Nafees of the Minority Coordination Committee alleges complete incapacitation due to vacancies across the chairperson, vice-chairperson and five member posts.
  • The chairperson’s office has been vacant since April 22 after the last incumbent demitted office, following a series of departures beginning in November 2024.
  • The plea seeks a writ of mandamus directing the Ministry of Minority Affairs to make transparent, time‑bound appointments, preferably within four weeks of a court order.
  • The matter was taken up after an August 20 representation reportedly went unanswered, with the court scheduling the next hearing for November 14.
