Delhi High Court Questions Wankhede’s Defamation Suit Over Aryan Khan Series, Orders Amendments

The judge asked why the case was filed in Delhi and directed the plaint be revised before any decision on the defamation and statutory allegations.

Overview

  • Former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede has sued Red Chillies Entertainment, Netflix and others over the Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, seeking a permanent injunction and Rs 2 crore in damages he proposes to donate to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.
  • Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav said the plaint was not maintainable in its present form, questioned jurisdiction, and directed amendments, with the matter to be re-listed after revision.
  • Wankhede alleges the show was deliberately conceived to malign him and spreads a misleading, negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies that harms public confidence.
  • The petition cites a scene where “Satyamev Jayate” is followed by a middle-finger gesture, alleging violations of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and provisions of IT/BNS law.
  • The suit names Red Chillies, Netflix and platforms including X, Google, Meta and RPG Lifestyle Media, and follows public comparisons between a character in Episode 1 and Wankhede from the 2021 cruise case in which Aryan Khan was later cleared.
