Delhi High Court Questions Maintainability of Sameer Wankhede’s Defamation Suit Over ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’

The judge asked Wankhede to justify filing the case in Delhi and to amend his plaint, leaving the defamation allegations to be considered later.

Overview

  • Wankhede has sued Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix, seeking an injunction, a declaration, and ₹2 crore in damages he says would be donated to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.
  • Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav queried how the case could proceed in Delhi and allowed time for an amended filing before the matter is listed again.
  • The suit asks for removal of a specific segment of Episode 1 (timestamp 32:02–33:50) that Wankhede says features a character closely resembling him.
  • The petition alleges a false and malicious portrayal and objects to a scene where a character makes an obscene gesture after saying “Satyamev Jayate,” citing the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
  • Defendants also include X, Google and Meta, and the filing references the 2021 cruise raid in which Aryan Khan was arrested before later being cleared; the show’s creators have not confirmed the character is based on Wankhede.
