Delhi High Court Orders Google to Use Tech to Remove Sadhguru Deepfake Ads

The court invoked India’s intermediary rules to require proactive takedowns through Google–Isha coordination.

Overview

  • Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora directed Google to deploy its technology to detect and remove identical or similar misleading ads and deepfakes about Sadhguru, including fabricated ‘arrest’ videos on YouTube.
  • The order requires Google and the Isha Foundation to meet so that offending URLs can be identified for automated removal, reducing the need for repeated takedown requests.
  • The court grounded its directions in Rule 4(4) of the IT Intermediary Rules, which obliges platforms to use technology-based tools to block content previously removed under court orders.
  • Google’s counsel said reported infringing links are being taken down and agreed to collaborate, with leave to file an affidavit if technological limitations arise.
  • The proceedings continue with filings to be exchanged on January 13, 2026 and a case-management hearing on February 25, 2026, building on a May 2025 ‘Dynamic+’ injunction protecting Sadhguru’s personality rights.
