Delhi University Voting Ends Under Heavy Security as High Court Bars Victory Processions

The court issued show-cause notices after reporting of widespread campaign-rule breaches and ordered that sealed EVMs be counted under strict police supervision.

Overview

  • Voting for the DUSU elections concluded on Friday, September 18, with counting of sealed EVMs beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 19 in the university Multipurpose Hall.
  • Police and paramilitary forces kept a large presence on campus with more than 2,000 personnel deployed to guard polling and the counting venue and to enforce road restrictions around North and South campuses.
  • The Delhi High Court served show-cause notices to about 140 candidates for alleged breaches of Lyngdoh rules, banned any post-result victory processions, and asked why collective damages or contempt remedies should not follow.
  • Officials used roughly 1,000 EVM units for the polls, with 960 machines active and 40 held in reserve, and university staff described sealed transport and control-room procedures to prevent tampering during movement to the counting hall.
  • Turnout was reported in the high 30s percent range by most outlets and student concerns about hostel safety, campus infrastructure and exam issues—heightened after the Satya Niketan building collapse—dominated voting-day conversations.
