Delhi HC Records Status Quo With Newslaundry and Ravish Kumar as Adani Pauses New Takedown Demands

The arrangement holds until a Rohini court rules on Adani’s interim injunction bid.

Overview

  • Under the High Court–recorded understanding, Adani will not seek further removals of material existing at 12:00 pm on September 26, and any items already taken down will not be reuploaded until the trial court decides the interim application.
  • The Delhi High Court disposed of writs by Newslaundry and Ravish Kumar challenging the Centre’s September 16 communication, and the Union said it will issue a corrigendum in light of the arrangement.
  • The government told the court its September 16 note was a communication of the civil court’s order, not an independent directive, and said it also relayed subsequent appellate orders.
  • The day before, a district judge ruled Paranjoy Guha Thakurta is not bound by the September 6 ex-parte gag order, directing the Senior Civil Judge to hear him before passing fresh orders.
  • An appellate judge on September 18 had already set aside the ex-parte order as to four journalists, criticising the takedown direction as sweeping and requiring the trial court to reconsider after hearing them.
