Delhi Government Tells Supreme Court Rs 60 Crore Uphaar Fine Funded Three Trauma Units

The government said it redirected the funds to high-density areas to fill emergency-care gaps after Delhi had no GNCTD hospital in Dwarka in 2015.

The bench led by justice Surya Kant will examine the Delhi government’s response on August 25, when AVUT is also expected to file its reply. (Representative photo/HT Archive)

Overview

  • In an affidavit filed August 16–17, the Delhi government told the Supreme Court it used the Rs 60 crore paid by the Ansal brothers to build trauma units at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, Satyawadi Raja Harish Chander Hospital in Narela and Siraspur Hospital.
  • The government argued these sites were chosen to address urgent gaps in emergency care in high-density, underserved regions and that its approach expanded on the original mandate.
  • Delhi pointed out that the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Sector 9, Dwarka, which became functional on May 10, 2021, did not exist when the 2015 court order was issued.
  • The Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy has challenged the reallocation as a violation of the Supreme Court’s directive to establish a dedicated memorial trauma centre in Dwarka.
  • The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on August 25 to examine the government’s affidavit and consider AVUT’s forthcoming response as the compliance dispute remains unresolved.
