Delhi Government Presents CAG Report Showing Rs 3,934 Crore Deficit

  • The CAG’s State Finances report tabled on August 4 reveals Delhi’s accounts swung from a Rs 4,566 crore surplus in 2022-23 to a Rs 3,934 crore deficit in 2023-24.
  • Total subsidies climbed to Rs 4,840 crore in 2023-24, up from Rs 3,593 crore in 2019-20 under the previous administration’s schemes.
  • Power subsidies alone accounted for Rs 3,249 crore or 70.39% of the total, and free bus travel for women surged from Rs 115 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 482 crore.
  • Revenue spending consumed 83% of all outlays, cutting the revenue surplus to Rs 6,462 crore from Rs 14,457 crore, while capital expenditure fell 15% with steep reductions in health, education, public works and urban development.
  • BJP leaders have seized on the audit to question the former AAP government’s fiscal management as debates begin on the new budget.
