Delhi Fast-Tracks Four Trunk Drain Projects To Curb Monsoon Waterlogging

The move forms part of a 2025 master plan that seeks long-term fixes after decades of outdated drainage design.

Overview

  • The government has prioritized four projects at an estimated ₹1,043 crore: Mundka Halt–Supplementary, MB Road stormwater drains, Kirari–Rithala, and Rohtak Road (NH-10).
  • The Mundka corridor plan spans 4.5 km along railway land with a 760-cusec capacity for a 1,520-acre catchment, an MoU with Railways is in place, and completion is targeted within 15 months after final approvals.
  • The MB Road project, executed by PWD, covers an 11.38 km stretch with 22.76 km of drains, is budgeted at ₹387.84 crore, and is scheduled to finish in 2.5 years with utility shifts and about 500 trees to be transplanted or felled.
  • The 7.2 km Kirari–Rithala trunk drain by DDA costs ₹250.21 crore with a 1,160-cusec design capacity, roughly 600 metres are built, and tree-felling permissions for 84 trees have been cleared to resume work.
  • Improvements along Rohtak Road (NH-10) are underway at ₹184 crore with ₹105 crore from the Centre’s SASCI scheme, and the target completion is March 2026.
