Delhi Expands ₹5 Atal Canteens as CM Opens Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh Outlets
The scheme serves ₹5 thalis twice daily using digital tokens under DUSIB oversight.
Overview
- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated new canteens in Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh and personally served meals to attendees.
- A total of 45 Atal Canteens are now operating across Delhi after a rollout marking Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 101st birth anniversary.
- Each ₹5 thali includes dal, rice, chapati, a seasonal vegetable and pickle, with lunch and dinner served at set hours.
- Operations use a digital token system with CCTV-monitored kitchens under Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board supervision, and each site is estimated to serve about 500 people daily.
- Officials say each meal costs the government roughly ₹30, and plans to add more locations have been announced, with reports citing 55 additional centres in the coming months.
