Delhi Ends Ban on Electricity Connections for ‘Booked’ Properties

The government clarifies that connections may be refused only upon formal MCD notice of demolition or sealing.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered the policy reversal, and the Power Department’s Special Secretary issued the implementing order on Monday.
  • More than 1.25 lakh families become eligible to apply for regular electricity connections under the new directive.
  • Distribution companies are instructed not to deny or disconnect supply solely because a property was listed as ‘booked’ for unauthorised construction.
  • Refusal or disconnection is now limited to instances where the MCD has formally notified active demolition or sealing action.
  • DISCOMs will set up helplines to assist affected residents, responding to long-running complaints and curbing reliance on informal power use.
