Delhi Deploys Permanent Dog-Catching Teams After Stray Bites at Para Athletics Worlds

City officials have stationed permanent catchers inside Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium following the bites to reinforce event safety.

Overview

  • Kenya’s Dennis Maragia and Japan’s Meiko Okumatsu were bitten on October 3 at the warm-up track and were treated at Safdarjung Hospital, with both reported stable.
  • Multiple outlets reported a stadium security guard was also bitten within 30 minutes, with sources saying this was the fifth bite incident during the championships.
  • The organising committee said it asked the MCD on August 21 to clear strays before the event and blamed re-entry on people feeding dogs near the venue and gaps under stadium gates.
  • MCD says operations have been intensified with four permanent dog-catching teams, a rapid response unit, and vehicles at the site, with 27 dogs captured since September 25 and transfers to ABC centres.
  • Kenya’s coach and team doctor voiced ongoing safety concerns, while organisers stated the venue has been sanitised and round-the-clock patrols are in place.
