Delhi Cuts Stadium Rentals Up to 50% as SAI Tightens Hire Terms

Officials say lower rates will help bring large concerts back to the capital.

Overview

  • SAI issued a 66-page notification on September 18 revising tariffs and conditions for five Delhi venues, including JLN, IG, Major Dhyan Chand, the swimming pool complex and Karni Singh.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium’s main arena is set at Rs 25 lakh per day for non-sports events, with Indira Gandhi’s main arena at Rs 16 lakh and Major Dhyan Chand’s pavilion and gallery at Rs 5 lakh; the concrete area at the swimming pool complex is Rs 5 lakh.
  • Organisers must protect the field of play and hand back venues clean, with a penalty equal to 10% of the per-day tariff for lapses and possible blacklisting for future bookings.
  • Recognised national and international sports competitions hosted by ministry-recognised bodies are exempt from venue hire charges, with only electricity billed.
  • Delhi and Union sports officials frame the move as a joint push that lowers headline costs by about 40–50%, with multi-day packages and simpler permissions, including a possible single-window system, under discussion and revenue gains projected.
