Delhi Crime Branch Arrests Fugitive Wanted Since 2001 in Taxi-Driver Murder-Robbery Case

Police say the 45-year-old lived under a false identity as Raj Singh, with the gang accused of selling stolen taxis in Nepal.

  • The accused, identified as Dhiraj (Dheeraj) Tomar, was picked up in Sikanderpur Kalan, Uttar Pradesh, by the Crime Branch’s NDR/R.K. Puram team led by Inspector Rakesh Kumar under the supervision of ACP Umesh Barthwal.
  • He was wanted in FIR No. 77/2001 from New Ashok Nagar, which followed the discovery of two men in a Mayur Vihar Phase III dump yard on March 17, 2001, where one victim died and another survived.
  • According to police, the gang hired taxis, killed the drivers, dumped the bodies in remote areas, and moved the stolen vehicles to Nepal for sale.
  • During interrogation, police say Tomar confessed to involvement in additional cases in Haldwani, Almora and Lohaghat in Uttarakhand besides the Delhi case.
  • Two co-accused, Dhirendra and Dilip Negi, were convicted in 2007, Dhirendra later jumped parole in 2010 and was arrested earlier this year, and investigators are now tracing remaining associate Ajay Lamba who is still at large.
