Delhi Court Grants First Bail in Turkman Gate Violence Case

The judge found police custody unnecessary, setting conditions for cooperation with investigators.

Overview

  • Additional Sessions Judge Joginder Prakash Nahar granted regular bail to 25-year-old Md Ubedullah on January 20 on a Rs 25,000 personal bond with one surety.
  • The order requires the accused to cooperate with the probe, appear when called, avoid tampering with evidence, and not attempt to influence witnesses.
  • Prosecutors cited CCTV footage and a co-accused’s disclosure, while the defence said the video shows him only near his home and no call records or video place him at violence.
  • The court noted his residence is about 50 metres from the site, recorded his role as sole breadwinner caring for a paralysed father, and found no prior criminal record.
  • The case stems from stone-pelting during an anti-encroachment drive near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid on January 6–7, with police reporting six injured officers and 18 arrests, and a magistrate having denied bail to five accused on January 14.
