Overview

  • On July 10, Magistrate Neha Mittal formally discharged all ten accused, closing the case stemming from their protest outside the Election Commission’s New Delhi office.
  • They faced charges under IPC sections 188, 145 and 34 for staging an unlawful assembly in violation of the prohibitory order.
  • The discharged leaders include MPs Derek O’Brien, Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale along with seven other Trinamool Congress figures.
  • During the protest, the TMC delegation accused central agencies – including the CBI, NIA, ED and Income Tax Department – of being used by the BJP-led government to target opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
  • A chargesheet was taken cognisance of in April, followed by summons, exemptions from personal appearance on April 30 and bail on May 13, but no arrests were made during the year-long proceedings.
