Overview

  • On June 19, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta formally requested Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to rename Old Delhi Railway Station as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station.
  • The renaming is intended to honor Maharaja Agrasen’s legacy of social justice, economic foresight and community welfare in Delhi.
  • The Old Delhi Railway Station, known as Delhi Junction since 1864, is one of the city’s busiest heritage transit hubs adjacent to Chandni Chowk.
  • Any station name change requires formal approval from the Union Ministry of Railways, which has yet to respond to the request.
  • The proposal follows similar BJP-led renamings of landmarks such as Mughal Garden to Amrit Udyan and Rajpath to Kartavya Path.
